Join colleagues from Minnesota and Iowa for connection, resource-sharing, and idea generation. This network gathering will feature a workshop on Subverting Resistance to Social Justice and Diversity Education: Constructive Approaches with Undergraduate Students. Faciliated by Andy J. Johnson, Ph.D. (he, him, his); Tanden L. Brekke, Ed.D. (he, him, his); and Trahern Crews (he, him, his) Using storytelling, this workshop will explore key components of the Moving Towards Social Justice Model (MTSJ) and Relational Partnership Development Model (RPDM). Through the collaborative relationship of a faculty member (Andy), community leader (Trahern), and community-engaged learning director (Tanden), the practices of problem conceptualization, creative problem-solving, trust building, and taking risks led to mutually beneficial projects that worked towards social justice. During this workshop, participants will: Examine reasons why some traditional classroom strategies for teaching social justice have unintended negative consequences and learn to develop alternative strategies designed to work with resistant students. The 2023 Civic Action Academy will be held on November 10-11 in Grinnell, IA at Grinnell College. This professional development opportunity will bring students from Iowa and Minnesota together to learn new ways of making a difference and building skills through civic and community engagement. Sessions will offer skill-building in civic action including philanthropy, leadership, dialogue, advocacy, and more. Students will also have a chance to learn what others are doing on other campuses and network with peers. Dr. Tania D. Mitchell and Dr. Kesho Scott as our keynote speakers for the 2023 Civic Action Academy. They will also provide workshops for faculty and staff on Saturday, November 11 as part of the Civic Engagement Mini-Summit.
