2022 Civic Action Academy

The 2022 Civic Action Academy will be held on November 11-12 in Des Moines, IA at Grand View University. For the fifth year in a row, this unique professional development opportunity will bring students from Iowa and Minnesota together to learn new ways of making a difference and building skills through civic and community engagement. Sessions will offer skill-building in civic action including philanthropy, leadership, dialogue, advocacy, and more. Students will also have a chance to learn what others are doing on other campuses and network with peers.   Event registration is $30/student for IAMNCC member campuses. Those from non-member campuses can register for $80/student. Hotel information is available on eventbrite and details will be shared once you register. 2020 Social Changemaker Challenge

Brought to you by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact and Principal Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact (IAMNCC) is excited to announce the 2020 Social Changemaker Challenge, funded by Principal. The Challenge is open to current college students in business or related majors interested in using emerging business skills to address complex social problems. Student teams will be supported in taking a systems-level approach to understanding the problem, identifying gaps, and proposing solutions. The Social Changemaker Challenge uses higher education’s human capital to create innovative solutions to complex social problems. It helps students get experience addressing complex social problems by demonstrating highly sought-after workforce skills like leadership, problem-solving, critical thinking, adaptability, and teamwork. Student teams will work with a local community or campus partner to submit an application to participate. The application will include a description of the problem and plans for the partnership. NIF Forum Dialogue: "Policing: What Should We Do to Ensure Equal Justice and Fair Treatment in Our Communities?", Thursday, November 12th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. (Free for students on Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact member campuses, Register now via Zoom) The goal of the National Issues Forum Dialogue on Policing is to provide an opportunity to practice respectful and engaging dialogue with students and other stakeholders from across our member campuses that will also serve as a helpful entry point for the Civic Action Academy program the following day, starting with the Civic Action Academy keynote by Jason Sole, Founder of the Humanize My Hoodie Movement, 2019 recipient of a John Legend “Can’t Just Preach” award, author of the memoir From Prison to PhD, and former President of the Minneapolis NAACP.

The recent shootings of Jacob Blake and Trayford Pellerin by police, as well as the multiple attacks and shootings on Black Lives Matter protesters by white supremacists in the following days, are a continuance of the current and historical trauma of Black communities through police brutality and systemic racism. We invite you to join us virtually as we identify actions within the civic mission of higher education where we can take to make change together as people of color and allies committed to equity. Network-Wide Constitution Day Fulfilling the Promise of Full Citizenship Virtual Dialogue

Through the fall and into 2021, we will offer monthly Critical Conversations dialogue opportunities for students, staff, faculty, and community members interested in building their skills as dialogue participants and facilitators. The sessions will engage participants in sample dialogues and time to reflect on how the featured prompts and models might translate to their home campuses, organizations, and/or communities.  The series will begin with dialogue tied to Constitution Day on September 17. Fulfilling the Promise of Full Citizenship Dialogue Training

In honor of Constitution Day, this dialogue guide will bring together conversations about history, including this year’s 19th amendment bicentennial, realities of the suppression of Black voters, and conversations about how to meaningfully engage with the 2020 presidential election during a global pandemic.
